05 | 2012 - DPD in Russia updates industry solution for distance selling companies

Moscow, May 10, 2012 - The comprehensive logistics solution DPD Consumer, aimed at distance selling companies including online stores, has become even more convenient for retailers and buyers. The new options and services will raise the level of competitiveness of the industrial solution on the Russian market.

Rapid growth in market volumes for distance selling is one of the key trends of the modern economy. At present, 70% of residents of major cities use online stores three or four times a month and this figure is steadily increasing. As the market is developing, the high quality delivery of goods purchased online is becoming one of the main elements of the success of online retailers.

DPD in Russia has updated its industry solution, DPD Consumer, expanding its offer with a whole range of new services to meet the requirements of both online stores and their customers.

Since April 23, DPD has now been offering DPD Consumer to more than 3000 Russian towns and cities – over 2600 of which with cash-on-delivery. The main benefit for the buyer is delivery on a fixed date with notice given by SMS or email on the day the order is received from the online store. The recipient can change the date or choose a convenient delivery slot by getting in touch with the DPD Call Centre. Thanks to this solution, customers of online stores can plan the date and time they will receive their goods in advance.

The recipient is also able to verify and test their goods. If necessary the courier will take back unsuitable goods and the cost of return will be considerably less than direct delivery. With the payment on delivery option, cash received from the buyer when the parcel is delivered is transferred promptly to the account of the online store.

For the convenience of online retailers, DPD in Russia offers IT system integration, an easy to use online service, MyDPD, and a range of web services to register orders, track delivery status and calculate delivery costs. On the website www.dpd.ru, staff at the online store or their customers can track deliveries with an internal number given to the buyer by the online store when an order is placed.

“We are aware that the logistics component is a key factor of success for an online store,” says Leonid Zondberg, the Commercial Director of DPD in Russia. “DPD Consumer is a product created in accordance with the requirements of leading online retailers and companies that are just entering the distance selling market. A large team worked for a number of months in order to help online stores increase sales and expand their presence in Russia and help offline sellers offer their clients a new and high quality sales channel”.

05 | 2012 - This year DPD CZ has sent one million SMS messages as part of its DPD Private service

Prague, 10 May 2012 - DPD CZ achieved this record number in the period from January 2012 until April 2012, when it sent customers one million SMS messages with information about the date of delivery. Thanks to these DPD Private SMS messages customers have a very detailed overview of the delivery of their goods. With a simple response to an interactive SMS the date of delivery can be changed and adapted to requirements. DPD CZ was the first express courier company in the Czech Republic to offer such a service. The sending of SMS messages for DPD CZ is provided by T-Mobile.

"The DPD Private Service is extremely popular with our customers. In 2011, it was used by 62% more customers for the shipping of goods compared to the previous year. We believe that we will achieve another million in an even shorter time," says the managing director of DPD CZ, Daniel Mareš.

"We are pleased that our scheme has become so popular. We always try to increase customer convenience using our innovative services", says Rudolf Urbánek, T-Mobile executive director of sales and customer service.

05 | 2012 - DPD Pakketservice takes two new EcoCombi’s into use
  • Parcel service provider takes a new step in sustainable strategy

Best, 9 May 2012 – DPD Pakketservice has taken two new EcoCombi’s  into use. The result of this expansion is that DPD now owns six EcoCombi’s in total for the transporting of parcels. With every EcoCombi 40% of CO2 emmissions is saved. This is partly due to the large cargo space of 130 m² which offers 45% more space than a regular truck. The use of the new EcoCombi’s  is a next step in the sustainaibility strategy of DPD. Earlier this year, the parcel service provider introduced a CO2  neutral delivery concept, named Total Zero.

As of now, the two new trucks will be used for the transporting of parcels between different offices of DPD: the route Amsterdam and Amster-dam-Best-Veenendaal.  Each of them will drive 100,000 kilometers per year. The four previously introduced EcoCombi’s of DPD are driving between Rotterdam and Best and on the route Meppel-Veenendaal. As soon as the law allows it, DPD will start using the EcoCombi’s across the border as well; it is expected that they will be driving in Belgium at the end of 2012.

Sustainable transportation
The use of the two new EcoCombi’s fits into the policy of DPD to make its logistic services, which largely take place via road transportation, more sutainable. Reducing CO2  emissions is one of the main objectives within this strategy, with the introduction of the Total Zero concept as a kick-off earlier this year. With Total Zero all parcels are delivered by DPD in a CO2 neutral manner, with no additional costs for the customer.

CO2 emissions and fuel saving
The cargo area of the new EcoCombi’s measures 130 m². This is 45% more than a regular truck, so that more parcels per ride can be taken along, with the result that the number of journeys is reduced. This by itself saves CO2 emissions; per ride the EcoCombi saves 40% CO2 emission. By using both EcoCombi’s, the saving of 37,000 liters of fuel per year can be realized. The in total six EcoCombi’s which are used by DPD, will together be able to take on 1,1 million kilometers. In contrast to regular trucks, the EcoCombi’s will save 175,000 liters of fuel and a equivalent of 470 tonnes of CO2 emission.

05 | 2012 - DPD's new environmentally-friendly parcel sorting centre in Nuremberg begins operations
  • Investment of €20 million secures jobs at the location
  • Important hub in the international DPD network
  • Sorting capacity of 15,000 parcels an hour

Nuremberg/Aschaffenburg, 08 May 2012 – International parcel and express service provider DPD has begun operations at a new, environmentally-friendly parcel sorting centre in Nuremberg's Bayernhafen district. The new facility, in which around €20 million was invested, replaces the previous Nuremberg depot. Thanks to cutting edge sorting equipment DPD can now process up to 15,000 parcels an hour in Nuremberg –twice the volume of the previous facility. With rising parcel volumes DPD will also be gradually increasing personnel numbers.

"This investment of €20 million makes Nuremberg an even more important hub in the international DPD network", states DPD CEO Arnold Schroven, adding: "In addition, the environmentally-friendly construction of the Nuremberg facility will act as a model for DPD's future building projects."

The Nuremberg facility has always been a major hub within the international DPD network, acting for example as a centre for cross-border shipments to the Czech Republic or Italy.

Focus on sustainable development

By applying sustainable building technology in the construction of the new facility DPD has also committed itself to environmental protection. The heating and air-conditioning of the office building is implemented by geothermal energy, while the gables of the sorting hall are completely made of glass, which reduces the energy requirements for electric lighting. A power management system ensures that savings potentials are identified and decisively implemented. In addition the roofs of the buildings are ready for the installation of solar panels, which will provide the energy for the depot.

DPD has been applying sustainable transport operations in Nuremberg for a long time now. For example, in the city's pedestrian precinct the company has been making deliveries with electric vehicles ever since the year 2000, and in the year 2009 the one-millionth parcel within this project was delivered to its consignee. And in long-distance transport, too, DPD attaches great value to sustainability, with parcel transport operations between Nuremberg and Hamburg being implemented entirely by rail since the autumn of 2010. Compared to conventional transport by road this saves an annual 200 tonnes of CO2. The new depot has even better rail links than before.

Throughout Europe DPD has set itself the target of continuously reducing CO2 emissions and, from July 2012, will be offering CO2-neutral transport for all parcels on its main European markets (see Total Zero). "The construction methods used at the Nuremberg depot are an excellent example of how we intend in future to reduce the emissions caused by DPD", comments DPD CEO Arnold Schroven. "Thanks to pilot projects in the fields of electro-mobility and rail transport Nuremberg has for many years been a model facility in terms of sustainability."

04 | 2012 - DPD in Germany invests over 40 million euros in Aschaffenburg hub
  • Investment of over 40 million euros will secure jobs in the region
  • Cutting-edge conveyor equipment will make Aschaffenburg one of DPD's flagship European hubs
  • Sustainable construction to act as a model for the entire network
  • Building work to begin in the summer of 2012

Aschaffenburg, 25 April 2012 – DPD is investing more than 40 million euros in increasing the capacity of its location in Aschaffenburg (Bavaria/Germany). The expansion and modernisation of its existing parcel distribution centre in Aschaffenburg is to begin in the summer of 2012, with the building work and the modernisation of the conveyor technology to be implemented in several phases, ending in mid-2014.

"We regard this investment as a long-term commitment to our location in Aschaffenburg, which is also home to our corporate HQ," explains CEO Arnold Schroven, adding: "On an international scale, too, the planned construction will be one of DPD's biggest-ever projects. And both customers and personnel here in the region will benefit significantly from the enormous performance capacity our new parcel distribution facility will have."

During the initial phase, to be completed by the end of the year, a second sorting hall is to be built next to the existing Aschaffenburg hub. As a second step the sorting and handling equipment in the existing hall is to be replaced by a modern, fully automatic system, while in a further stage of construction a third sorting hall is to be built at a later time.

In the long term the depot in the centre of Aschaffenburg is also to be moved to the expanded hub. DPD CEO Arnold Schroven explains: "Bringing together these two operational locations in the long term to form one highly modern sorting and distribution centre will concentrate our capacities and ensure that we will be in a position to deal with major increases in parcel volumes in future, while continuing to offer our customers the high-quality DPD shipping services they are used to."

Thanks to leading-edge conveyor technology the new installation will be able to sort 20,000 parcels an hour, with additional loading bays increasing the number of long-distance domestic and international linehaul operations. This will increase the strategic importance of the location as a major hub within the international DPD network.

When it comes to sustainability, too, DPD is applying the very latest standards. The new sorting halls will feature energy generation by means of photovoltaic equipment and their gables will be entirely made of glass, which will significantly reduce electricity requirements for lighting purposes. Added to this the energy requirements of the new office building will be reduced to a minimum by innovative heating and air-conditioning systems based on air-to-water heat pumps, the heating of service water by means of solar panels, and a central system for providing shade. Europe-wide DPD has set itself the target of reducing CO2 emissions continuously, and in line with this strategy will be offering CO2-neutral shipping operations for all parcels on its core European markets from July 2012.

Andreas Butzer, who is in charge of the new building project, adds: "Care will be taken during the building work to ensure that renewable raw materials are used as much as possible. For example, in the new halls ceiling supports will not be made of concrete but of laminated wooden beams, and the construction of the halls themselves will for the most part use recyclable steel and sandwich panels. We are well within our time schedule for the project and thanks to excellent cooperation with all the relevant authorities and local government departments we were able to submit the building application as early as February. We now hope that the building permit will be issued quickly. Our new buildings and the extension of our existing facilities will offer worthwhile benefits to the local economy in the form of increased transport capacities, higher sorting volumes and even faster delivery times. Even today 95% of all parcels shipped within a radius of 550 km are already delivered within 24 hours."

04 | 2012 - DPD confirms No. 2 position in Europe
  • DPD majority shareholder GeoPost announces consolidated turnover of 3.668 billion euros in 2011

Paris / Aschaffenburg 13 April 2012 – GeoPost, subsidiary of La Poste and a leading player in the field of international parcel shipping, recorded a total revenue of 3.668 billion euros in 2011 on the basis of comparable data. This is an increase in sales of 6.6% compared to the previous year. GeoPost also recorded growing volumes of 6.8% in 2011, when more than 680 million parcels were shipped throughout the DPD network.

GeoPost has been growing almost everywhere in Europe. Exceptional growth was recorded in the United Kingdom, where GeoPost UK succeeded in generating new business at a record level. Sales were supported by the local Predict Service, which managed to deliver almost 97% of all parcels in the pre-announced one-hour delivery window. In Eastern Europe DPD Poland was able to establish itself in second place on the domestic market, while DPD Czech Republic proved to be extremely successful creating a market-leading e-commerce solution, as well as increasing its DPD Private B2C solution by 62%.

In the Netherlands a major milestone was achieved by the opening of the “New Holland Hub”. Together with the crucial new depots and hubs which are currently under construction near Cologne in Germany and Lodz in Poland, for example, this will add even greater efficiency to the company's European road network. The new hub near Lodz will be the biggest of its kind in Eastern Europe and the depot in Erftstadt near Cologne will secure DPD's business in Germany and beyond. DPD in Germany also recorded record volumes in 2011, transporting an average of 70,000 parcels more each working day than during the year before.

In the southern parts of the continent, which have been severely affected by the financial and economic crisis, business developed less dynamically. Nevertheless DPD's associate company SEUR was able to defend its status as the most profitable parcel operator in Spain and retained its position as the market leader.

04 | 2012 - DPD Slovenija starts a special three-week campaign in shopping centres

Maribor, 2 April 2012 – Has it ever happened to you that you wanted to send a parcel express abroad, but you didn’t know what kind of parcel you could in fact send or whether there are certain specifications, what the dispatch procedure is and what number you need to call for the parcel to be collected or delivered? In order to make the public aware of the system for sending parcels abroad, DPD Slovenija began its campaign ‘Around Europe with DPD Slovenija’ on Saturday, 31. 3. 2012.

They made their presentation in the Qlandija shopping centre in Maribor; the next two locations where people will find out about this way of sending parcels will be at the City center Celje on 7.4. 2012 and City park Ljubljana on 14.4. 2012.
DPD Slovenija is one of the leading parcel distributors in Slovenia and abroad. This time, with their campaign in shopping centres, they want to introduce themselves not only as a Slovene parcel distributor but above all as an international parcel distributor, offering  standard and express services, and acting daily on behalf of thousands of satisfied clients.

Info points have been set up in shopping centres where visitors passing by can get useful information about sending parcels to selected foreign countries.  Five countries – Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, the Netherlands and France – are shown and all the visitors are able to ask detailed questions and get additional clarification. The red thread of the event is represented by postcards handed out to passers-by showing all the required details and options for dispatch to the selected country. Competitions with practical prizes have also been organised for visitors.

The Director of DPD Slovenija Igor Jakovljević said about it:.
“One of the most important goals at DPD Slovenija is for us to get as close as possible to our clients and ensure that they get high-quality, reliable services. In the shopping centres we presented and will continue presenting all the advantages of our dispatch around the whole of Europe. We would like to make people aware of how to send things abroad, as we have noticed that this is what most queries received by us in the company are about. This campaign is therefore intended for all those people who want to know more about us and about our high quality in sending parcels abroad.”

04 | 2012 - DPD in Russia expands regional network

Moscow, March 27, 2012 - DPD in Russia is continuing to expand its network of branches and representative offices, in response to the ever increasing need for high-quality regional delivery services – representative offices have been opened in Saransk (Mordovia) and Makhachkala (Dagestan).

Makhachkala, and Saransk are the largest industrial centers in Dagestan and Mordovia, and are the main focal points of economic potential in these regions. Both cities are developing rapidly and are distinguished by their favourable location, which makes them important transport hubs with the ever-increasing flow of goods traffic. This is why DPD in Russia decided to open new representative offices in these areas.

The DPD in Russia representative offices that have opened in Saransk and Makhachkala are connected by a unified information network to all branches of the company and offer a wide range of traditional services, including classic and express delivery of parcels and goods on time to any location in Russia, as well delivery within the regions. All solutions include the option of delivery either to a terminal, or to the door of the recipient.

“The development strategy of DPD in Russia involves opening branches or representative offices in those areas where our clients have business interests and the need for transportation and logistics services of a high standard,” said the Commercial Director of DPD in Russia, Leonid Zondberg. “Convenient, high quality, diverse - this is how you can describe the portfolio of logistics solutions offered by DPD in any region of the country”.

04 | 2012 - DPD in Russia: new unified Call Centre opens at the company

Moscow, March 29, 2012 - DPD in Russia is continuing to follow strategies to improve its service quality. In order to communicate even more efficiently with customers a unified Call Centre was set up with sites in Moscow and Novosibirsk, with a dedicated toll-free telephone line for calls throughout the Russian Federation.

The centralized DPD in Russia Call Centre began to receive calls from October 2011. There are currently 38 operators on the line in Moscow and 12 operators in Novosibirsk. This approach enables the company to provide coverage throughout Russia, regardless of time zones: the staff of the Moscow Call Centre provide service to clients in the Central, Southern, Volga and North-West regions, and the Novosibirsk Call Centre works with clients of the Urals, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Due to the growth of distance selling sales and the introduction of the updated industry solution DPD Consumer, in the coming months a special unit will be set up in the Call Centre to work with both online stores as well as their customers. The project is scheduled for completion by July 2012.

"The unified Call Centre is one of the most important subdivisions of the company; customer loyalty and the perception of the image of DPD on the market in general depend on it,” said the Director of Customer Service at DPD in Russia, Natalia Tishkova. “Our clients’ businesses very often depend on the quality of responses to calls. This is why we pay special attention to the professionalism of operators at the Call Centre - all of them undergo special training and instruction, which helps them to build a good rapport with clients and give advice in a professional manner”.

04 | 2012 - DPD Czech Republic expands its portfolio of international services to include COD to Poland and Hungary

Prague, 2 April 2012 - “By extending the facility to pay cash on delivery to a further two countries we are responding to the demand from companies in the Czech market. We are simplifying life for Czech exporters and we are opening new possibilities for Internet sales," says Daniel Mareš, CEO of DPD CZ. "COD is a very popular payment method in Central and Eastern Europe, and in this way we differ significantly from the most developed European markets. Customers do not have a great deal of confidence in paying by payment card directly over the internet, and therefore payment for transported goods in cash is very common. By contrast, in developed countries non-cash payment clearly dominates. "

Thanks to the new international COD service, Czech e-shops are also able to send their goods to their customers in the aforementioned four countries. For customers, the system for sending packages abroad is similar to COD payments in the Czech Republic. The only difference is that the amount taken from the recipient in any of the four countries must be specified in their respective national currencies. This service is not only highly effective, but also cheaper compared with bank charges for international payments.

03 | 2012 - DPD Croatia - the courier service that follows the trends

From 15 to 17 March one of the biggest fashion events in Croatia took place – DOVE FASHION.HR. As the event's official partner DPD delivered invitations for this important fashion show to many famous figures from the world of business and show business.

Pavilion 10 of Zagreb Fair hosted excellent collections by famous Croatian fashion designers such as: Ivica Klarić, Martina Felja, Ivica Skoko, Ivana Popović, Robert Sever, Zigman, Aleksandra Dojčinović and many others. Many fashion lovers came to see the proposed styles for next spring, and we at DPD were very interested to see the faces of people to whom we had delivered invitations sitting in the front rows.

DPD not only follows fashion trends but also market trends. DPD has responded to the fact that it can be difficult to find the recipients of packages at home. If somebody who works full-time orders a product via internet, and the merchant is a DPD client, the recipient will be informed of the planned delivery via e-mail or SMS one day in advance. The recipient may then confirm delivery or delay it to one of the following two days. The result is a win-win situation for both merchant and package recipient. Delivery accuracy is increased as is the satisfaction of buyers and customers.

Also, in view of the fact that over a million people in Croatia (more accurately, 1.45 million in January 2012) use Facebook which represents 65% of the Internet-using population, DPD has also decided to open an official Facebook page and use this powerful marketing tool to inform members about new products and services and all news and activities concerning DPD.

Following new trends in communication, at the end of this month DPD will enable its clients to use web pages adapted for display on mobile devices with the Android™ platform totally free of charge. DPD will offer its clients key online services through this important communication channel.

Moscow, March 20, 2012 – DPD Company was elected to chair the Business and Disability Council in Russia. The main activity guidelines of the Council are inclusive employment and adaptation of handicapped people at the work place, as well as availability of products and services of various companies for them.

The Council unites representatives of businesses and non-profit organizations who realize how important it is for handicapped people to lead a full-fledged life in society and use professional skills and knowledge. All Council members view handicapped people as a major skilled human resource which is practically ignored by the business community. Council members advocate such key values as responsibility, voluntary initiative, openness, honesty, as well as respect of variety principles.

According to official data, there were over 13 million handicapped people in Russia in late 2011 and 31% of them are people of the working age. However only 22% of them are permanently employed. Most of them work in specialized enterprises set up specifically for handicapped people by various societies of disabled people (Russian Society of the Blind, Russian Society of the Deaf, etc.).

During the time of its operations the Council (founded in 2008) achieved major results in informing the community about employment of handicapped people. The effort of Council member-companies and their events (the annual Path to Career contest for young handicapped people, training and secondment in major Russian and international companies, raising awareness of company staff about problems of handicapped people organized by the Perspective regional public organization of disabled people, a member of the Council) firstly drew the attention of the business community to the problem of employment of disabled people and, secondly, help many of the people find employment by profession.

In Russia DPD will continue to implement the strategy of the Council and will take practical effort to adapt handicapped people in society, help them with employment, and raise awareness of the Russian public about their problems.

Council representatives, including DPD in Russia human resource director Yelena Afanasyeva visited the United States to exchange experience at an USBLN conference (U.S. analog of the Russian Council) which discussed “Key Business Strategies: disability at work place, on the market and in supply chains. Successful Business Strategies.” On the sidelines of the conference Yelena together with Russian and U.S. colleagues held a seminar on Russia/US Dialogue: Disabled People and Global Business. Last autumn DPD in Russia actively contributed to the organization and holding of the third annual forum Business for Equal Opportunities under the motto Fewer Obstacles – More Opportunities!

Such efforts are a part of the corporate social policy of DPD in Russia and Council activities in general which help promote public tolerance to handicapped people which in the final end leads to their employment. DPD in Russia human resource director Yelena Arefyeva said: “I would like the number of Council members to increase and include as many companies as possible which are interested in employing disabled people. It is important for employers to understand that handicapped people are professionals in their trade and can bring major benefits to the company which employs them. The Perspective organization which enjoys unique experience in finding, selecting, and assessing handicapped candidates and adapting them at a new work place is always ready to help find the most suitable employee for a concrete job. The organization provides free recruiting services for those ready to employ such people.”

03 | 2012 - DPD Polska receives the prestigious AEO certificate

DPD Polska has received the European Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) certificate, which enables a significant reduction in procedures between businesses and customs administration. To receive the certification, the company has fulfilled a number of stringent requirements in areas such as quality management and safety. The highly prized certificate is testimony to the responsibility of the company and obtaining it provides an opportunity for further development.

AEO is one of the most prestigious certifications awarded to companies in the European Union. Its main purpose is to improve the safety of international trade and streamline procedures. The document is a specific authorisation granted by customs authorities to simplify procedures for businesses and allow them to perform independently activities provided by law. It is worth noting that the number of applications and audit procedures is very high; however, only selected entities ultimately receive the certificate.

DPD Polska met a number of stringent formal requirements concerning compliance with the law, systems for managing commercial and logistics records, as well as internal control and financial solvency. Through doing so, the company has consolidated its position as a reliable and trusted partner of government administration.

“AEO Certification is a ticket to the further development of our services at a European level,” says Krzysztof Porebski, Director of Quality and Safety at DPD Polska. “It is also opens the way to improve processes and align them with the expectations of our clients. It allows us to implement services effectively with guarantee that benefits can be obtained from all available easements,” he adds.

The first AEO certificates were awarded in Poland at the end of 2008. Up to now, 385 certificates have been granted in Poland, while in the EU as a whole over 5000 have been issued, with 2000 in Germany alone.

02 | 2012 - DPD Austria launches “DPD by rail project”

Leopoldsdorf bei Wien, 28 February 2012 –  DPD, Austria's leading private parcel service, has launched a pilot project in the interests of protecting the climate. In order to reduce CO2 emissions DPD is testing the shipping of parcels by rail instead of the conventional long-distance road transport by truck.

DPD by rail
"With each kilometre that doesn't need to be travelled by truck we're making a contribution towards conserving the environment and reducing CO2 emissions in the interests of sustainability. By switching from road to rail we can utilise existing resources efficiently, and this is why we have now started a test project with Rail Cargo, in which parcels are transported by train", explains Rainer Schwarz, CEO of DPD Austria.

1,200 green parcels daily
The pilot project began at the end of February with the transport of 1,200 parcels a day on the line connecting Wels and Bludenz.

The future of the project
With the implementation of sustainability projects DPD is not just improving its carbon footprint but is also driving forward new thinking in shipping operations. In describing the decisive factors behind the project Mr Schwarz says: "The reason why the pilot project has been implemented now is that the operating hours at the freight terminals have become compatible with our system. At Wels station these hours have been extended, which means DPD can take advantage of them. At the same time, however, we have to take cost into consideration. This is why in the long term the cost factors and economic viability of the project have to be looked at in detail. In the interests of sustainability, however, we would very much like to continue this pilot project and even to extend it."

02 | 2012 - DPD opens state-of-the-art parcel terminal in Estonia

On Rae Industrial Park DPD Eesti AS is today, 17 February, opening a new logistics centre which features sorting equipment that is more up-to-date and powerful than any facilities operated by similar service providers in Estonia. The new centre enables courier deliveries to be handled even faster and in significantly larger volumes than before.

More than two million parcel deliveries are handled by DPD Eesti. “If we speed up the handling of parcels during the delivery process by just a single second, it means a time saving of more than 555 hours annually. This is definitely of great value both to our customers and to us, because time is money for everybody,” said DPD Eesti Managing Director Tarmo Tael when he presented the capabilities of the new hub.

In addition the new facility provides better working and living conditions for the employees and, according to the managing director, customers will also benefit.

The parcel sorting technology in the recently completed distribution centre is also new. This is the latest technology, which will provide the company with capacity for effective growth in parcel handling. Commenting on the output of the new terminal Rainer Rohtla, Manager of Development Projects at DPD Eesti AS, states: “In our previous terminal the parcel sorting capacity was 2,000 to 2,400 parcels per hour, depending on the nature of the parcels. In the new Taevavärava terminal this will be approximately one and a half to two times faster, which means we should be able to sort 4,500 parcels per hour.” According to Mr Rohtla the capability for handling pallets will also increase significantly in the new building. “In making the investment we considered the specifics of the local market. It is important for us that the facilities we use should provide the best possible benefits to our customers and the owners,” states Rainer Rohtla, adding that the new terminal will provide the company with the opportunity to virtually double its parcel volumes over the next five years.

The gross area of DPD’s new modern terminal is 2,038.8 square meters, with an additional 822.2 square meters of office space.

The construction of the building began in the spring of 2011 and the total investment was approximately 2 million euros. The distribution centre was designed and constructed on behalf of DPD by Astlanda Ehitus OÜ.

02 | 2012 - DPD set to introduce free carbon neutral shipping on all deliveries in industry first

Aschaffenburg / Paris, February 14th – All parcels will soon be shipped carbon neutral - at no extra charge to the customer - by DPD in the first initiative of its kind to be offered by a parcel & express service provider.  From July DPD will apply Total Zero, its new carbon neutrality commitment, to all shipments.

The carbon neutral commitment will be achieved through a triple mechanism: measuring emitted carbon, reducing the carbon produced by DPD and subsequently carbon offsetting. In launching Total Zero DPD is committing to keep reducing its environmental impact through introducing a range of emission reduction initiatives – called insetting - which will collectively help reduce CO2 emissions.

DPD’s carbon footprint has been calculated regularly since 2006 and DPD has been reducing its carbon footprint per parcel over time. In parallel DPD parent company GeoPost will offset non avoidable CO2 emissions through a partnership with well-know French offset partner CDC Climat.

Remaining carbon emissions of approximately 500,000 tonnes each year will be offset for 5 major markets. Carbon credits will be used to compensate for GHG emissions emitted by the business.

John Acton Managing Director of DPD & Executive Vice-President of GeoPost S.A., said: “Total Zero was born out of DPD’s recognition of the need for the highly carbon intensive logistics industry to reduce its carbon footprint – and at the same time reduce its impact on the planet.”

“DPD will continue to look at every aspect of its business with the goal being to significantly reduce its own CO2 emissions per parcel year-on-year – which are nevertheless lower than our competitors due to the use of our European road network rather than air transport,” Acton said. He added that CDC Climat’s international reputation and long-term commitment to lowering CO2 emissions makes it the perfect offsetting partner for Total Zero.

Pierre Ducret, CEO, CDC Climat said: “Total Zero represents a genuine commitment to not only reduce carbon emissions in such an emission-heavy industry, but also to anticipate and enter the new low carbon economy.”
“CDC Climat is working closely with the company to identify a range of carbon offsetting projects that it will support via Total Zero – which could range from overseas projects in the developing world through to more local schemes in Europe.” He added the amount of carbon offset annually per parcel by will reduce year-on-year due to the impact of the various insetting measures.

The company has implemented a measuring scheme for carbon emissions and have an on-going programme in place to measure and reduce the CO2 they produce. This work is undertaken through a series of ‘insetting’ measures - initiatives designed to help lower the organisation’s carbon footprint through a group-wide responsibility strategy which includes a wide range of domestic and international projects. Insetting initiatives currently helping to reduce DPD’s carbon output include:

  • Eco-driving training for delivery drivers and the UK ‘Drive Smart’ campaign that raises awareness of Eco-driving;
  • Introducing the UK’s largest fleet of double deck trailers which can hold a third more volume than a single deck vehicle;
  • Reducing energy consumption by measures such as sensor activated lightning and power awareness campaigns in UK.
  • Compressed Natural Gas Vans in the Netherlands. DPD Netherlands is introducing new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vans to its fleet.
  • Pedal power in Hamburg. DPD in Germany has introduced delivery bikes that can carry up to 50 parcels to residential areas of the Hamburg.
  • Zero emissions vans in Stuttgart and Hamburg. DPD in Germany has introduced Vito E-CELL Mercedes Benz electric vans for parcel delivery.
  • Motion detector light switches in Belgium. DPD Belgium has installed motion detector light switches to its Flémalle hub. This technology ensures lights are automatically activated throughout the hub – ensuring that lights are not left on needlessly overnight

Total Zero will apply to business and consumer shipments to all destinations around the globe from the five major markets of France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and BeLux.
DPD is a subsidiary of GeoPost, 100 % affiliate company of French Groupe La Poste, which has made a significant carbon reduction commitment today in announcing it will offset all mail and parcels sent globally via the service. This combined action of mail and parcels is a major step forward towards climate protection.

01 | 2012 - DPD and Hermes join forces to develop a new Parcel Shop infrastructure for the Russian market

Moscow, 24 January 2011 – In the light of the growth trends in the Russian market, the international logistics companies Hermes and DPD have established a joint venture to provide additional, high quality delivery services for the Russian market. The key element of this cooperation is building an efficient network of Parcel Shops under the Hermes-DPD brand in the Russian market.

Currently, the Hermes-DPD network of Parcel Shops includes 300 shops in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Krasnodar and Rostov-na-Donu. The Parcel Shops are set up as “shop-in-shop” in close cooperation with well known Russian retail chains. By 2014, the network will be extended to up to 1,500 shops in 44 main cities all over Russia.

The Russian distance trading sector is a rapidly developing market. According to the expert estimates, in 2011 its volume will amount to approximately RUB 330 bln. The market growth rates exceed 30% a year. Major driver is the sustained boom in the e-commerce segment, which grows faster than the market as a whole. High dynamics of retail development and an increasing demand for RUNET demonstrate a good potential for distance trading and e-commerce, and as a result, a fast growing demand for high quality delivery services.

The Hermes-DPD Parcel Shop network provides its customers with a unique service ensuring a reliable, high quality and timely delivery. This includes an option to pay for the goods ordered at a location convenient for the customer.
In this joint venture Hermes is contributing its expertise in deliveries to private customers, which has already been demonstrated in a number of countries by setting up country-wide Parcel Shop structures.

"In the field of consumer logistics, that is the delivery of parcels to private customers, Russia is a major market in which we see enormous potential for growth", stresses Marc Dessing, COO of Hermes Europe. “By way of our unique Parcel Shop system we aim to offer a real alternative to the Russian private customer. To achieve this, we bring in our expertise as a leading operator of Parcel Shops in Europe and our proven quality record in parcel deliveries 2C. Together with DPD as a partner, we are extremely well positioned to make a strong entry into this market.”

With its international network competence and an established depot network in all of Russia's regions DPD will provide the operational backbone of the cooperation.
"As a leading international parcel service provider with a seamless transport network which is unmatched in Europe DPD operates a high-capacity network in Russia which covers 4,000 destinations in 70 of the country's regions. With extraordinary growth rates such as the 50 per cent achieved in recent years DPD in Russia has developed into the market leader in express shipping. This strong position is now to be reinforced by expanded operations in Russia's fast-growing mail-order segment," states Arnold Schroven, CEO of DPD.

Tatyana Yampolskaya, CEO of the Hermes-DPD network (LLC “B2C”) adds: "Our Parcel Shops offer customers a new and attractive delivery option in a very high quality. Above all customers now have the possibility of collecting the goods they have ordered from distance-selling companies at an easily accessible location and at any time that suits them. Thanks to the reliability and efficiency of the Hermes and DPD network they will also benefit from very attractive delivery times”, underlines Yampolskaya.

01 | 2012 - DPD supports the cause of Light Into Europe in Romania

Bucarest, January 2012 – As of December 2012, DPD Romania, one of the major parcel post and express delivery companies on the local market will be supporting the Light Into Europe Foundation on a pro bono basis. DPD will be providing all logistic requirements for Light Into Europe, Romania’s only foundation dedicated to the development of activities and support programmes for people with sensory disabilities.

Dynamic Parcel Distribution (DPD) Romania, listed amongst the top express and parcel post delivery companies, owned by the Geopost group, a subsidiary of La Poste, is joining the Light Into Europe cause, the only organisation exclusively dedicated to the development of activities and support programmes for people with sensory disabilities in Romania. For an unlimited period, DPD Romania will cover all the logistic requirements of the foundation in Romania.

Lucian Aldescu, CEO DPD Romania says: “In our view, being able to help the wonderful people from Light Into Europe is a joy and an honour. Sadly people with sensory disabilities in Romania do not have access to the support and attention they need to lead a normal life, to be naturally integrated into the community. Light Into Europe is the only organisation in the country, which, for more than seven years, has been totally dedicating itself with above-average energy to providing all that is necessary for those with sensory deficiencies to be able to lead a normal life, to enjoy acceptance and a healthy development. It is enormously satisfying to be able to take an active and visible part in the growth of the quality of life of people around you, to be a part of a cause which has in its gift the ability to make the life of some people more beautiful”.

“We are extremely grateful to DPD Romania for becoming a part of our mission and for transporting all the packages and parcels intended for those people who are relying on the support of Light Into Europe. It is a fantastic piece of news for us, especially during this difficult period of recession in Europe in which any form of support means a great deal. Now, with the help of DPD, we will be able to distribute educational materials which we are currently doing, including books in Braille, DVD’s translated into sign language, as well as games, clothes collected for all those who need these items, without having to worry anymore about the transport costs. The money saved in this way can then be used to arrange for more items that will help our friends with disabilities” says Stan Platt, President of Light into Europe.

Light into Europe is the only foundation in Romania dedicated to the development of support activities and programmes for people with sensory disabilities. The foundation started its activities and has been offering educational services since 2004. Currently more than 3,000 visually impaired children and children with hearing difficulties and more than 500 families with such disabilities are receiving help from Light into Europe.

01 | 2012 - DPD's environmental management certified in accordance with ISO 14001
  • TÜV SÜD confirms the effectiveness of the DPD environmental management system
  • Simultaneous certification of DPD in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg

Aschaffenburg, 11 January 2012 – Parcel and express service provider DPD has successfully been certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 international environmental norm. The certification followed a process covering several months and involving numerous audits at DPD branches by TÜV SÜD, the independent testing body. The certified environmental management system covers DPD in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Our ambitious and measurable environmental policy will enable us to anchor responsibility towards the environment even more deeply within our organisation, states DPD CEO Arnold Schroven, adding Certification in accordance with ISO 14001 confirms this - and at the same time represents a commitment to the future.

DPD's environmental management system is based on measurable environmental targets covering subjects such as reducing energy consumption, emissions, waste and water consumption. On the basis of reliable key data DPD continuously measures of success of the measures it implements for the purpose of achieving environmental targets. The documentation and measurement of this key data, together with the consistent implementation of the company's environmental policy, are monitored by TÜV SÜD at regular intervals. The current certification remains valid for an initial period of three years.

12 | 2011 - DPD ships new record quantities in 2011
  • Parcel and express service provider's volumes rise by 6%
  • Daily 70,000 parcels more than in year before
  • Over €90 million planned for network expansion in 2012

Aschaffenburg, 19 December 2011 – International parcel and express service provider DPD is heading for a new record year. Interim figures indicate that growth in volumes for 2011 will be a healthy 6%. This means that every working day in Germany DPD transported an average of 70,000 parcels more than during the year before, which adds up to a total of approx. 320 million shipments. "This further increase and our continued growth in this segment are all the more remarkable because we are already the market leaders in parcel shipping between business customers in Germany", states DPD CEO Arnold Schroven, adding: "We are continuing to grow with our existing customers while at the same time adding new ones and registering an above-average increase in B2C operations - in other words deliveries to private customers."

According to Mr Schroven growth at DPD continues as in the past to be higher than that of the parcels market as a whole. "Our uninterrupted upwards trend confirms the DPD strategy of aiming at growth both in the B2B (business to business) segment and on the B2C (business to consumer) market." This positive development is being driven by quality and innovation. "Our appeal to customers is that we have developed solutions which enable us to transfer the high quality of our B2B services to B2C deliveries, too." This applies both to classical DPD customers, who in addition to traditional deliveries to retailers are now also increasingly supplying private customers, and to new customers in the rapidly growing e-commerce segment who deliver to the consumer direct.

"A major factor behind our service-driven growth in the B2C segment is represented by the new, intelligent delivery options which we have introduced this year", explains CEO Schroven. For example, with DPD's FlexDelivery service consignees receive advance notification by SMS or e-mail that a parcel is to be delivered to them. They can then use the same medium to respond directly and specify the day they prefer for the delivery. On the day of delivery itself they then also receive advance information about the time window in which the DPD driver will be calling. Currently this time window is between two and six hours, but in the year 2012 it is to be brought down to 2 hours. "The aim is to communicate actively with consignees and offer them the kind of options which will make it possible to deliver parcels at the first attempt. This increases satisfaction on the part of the consignees and demonstrably reduces the number of returned parcels."

In 2012 an amount of over 90 million euros is to be invested in expanding the DPD network
In spite of generally less than positive prospects for the economy, DPD is confident that it will be able to continue its growth in 2012. "We're sticking to our expansion plans and in the coming year we will be spending over €90 million in Germany alone on increasing our capacity significantly and optimising our network", confirms Arnold Schroven.

12 | 2011 - DPD in Germany packs Christmas parcels – and once more donates 30,000 euros for social projects

Aschaffenburg, 13 December 2011 – In the year 2012, too, the 'DPD Initiative for People in Aschaffenburg' will be donating 30,000 euros for social projects from which the city's residents will benefit. Klaus Herzog, the Mayor of Aschaffenburg in Bavaria, and DPD CEO Arnold Schroven invited applications for funding in the course of a 'DPD Volunteers' Day', during which staff from the Aschaffenburg-based parcel and express service provider packed Christmas gift parcels for the 'Shining children's eyes' campaign on behalf of needy children and young people. This Christmas campaign has been initiated by the 'Malteser Hilfsdienst' voluntary organisation and the 'Grenzenlos' social advisory service.

"I'm very glad that for the third year in succession DPD will be promoting social projects in our region", said Mayor Herzog on the occasion of the 'DPD Volunteers' Day', adding "I invite all the city's associations and organisations to apply with their projects for financial support." DPD CEO Arnold Schroven confirms: "We don't just want to do some good at Christmas time only. Our aim is to make a permanent contribution to the city which is home to our company, and the DPD initiative is an ideal vehicle for achieving this."

Since 2009 DPD has funded 19 projects to a total amount of 60,000 euros. In addition, thanks to the 'DPD Volunteers' Days' a further 12 initiatives have received hands-on support by staff from DPD's Aschaffenburg head office. The projects which are to receive financial support are selected by an independent jury which in the year 2012 will consist of Klaus Herzog, the Mayor of Aschaffenburg, Volkmar Gregori, the Evangelical Lutheran Dean of Aschaffenburg and DPD CEO Arnold Schroven.

11 | 2011 - DPD Estonia honours 'Couriers' Day'

Tallin. 17th of November 2001 – For courier services the month before Christmas is the most hectic time of the year. In gratitude and to show its appreciation of the couriers, who work hard throughout the whole year to ensure that parcels are delivered safely and punctually from the shipper to the consignee, leading Estonian courier service DPD has decided to honour the third Friday in November as 'Couriers' Day'.

The courier service, which is one of the biggest in Estonia, employs more than 100 couriers who day in, day out deliver thousands of parcels to both business and private consignees throughout the entire country. The initiative of nominating one day in the year as 'Couriers' Day' has been initiated in Latvia and Lithuania as well as in Estonia. Currently 115 couriers in Estonia, 80 couriers in Latvia and 250 couriers in Lithuania are responsible for ensuring that goods are delivered within 1 - 2 working days in all three Baltic states.

"On average our couriers deliver up to 20% more parcels in November and December than they do in the remaining months of the year. And in spite of the increased workload a courier has to carry out, the relevant duties have to be carried out just as responsibly and professionally as at any other time", explains DPD Managing Director Tarmo Tael.

At first sight the work of a courier may seem to be quite simple -- you take a parcel and you deliver it to the consignee's address. However, this is only part of the courier's everyday work. "Couriers form an important link in a large system which is based on precision operations, and their work has a direct impact on the trouble-free processes and quality of this system", adds Tael.

At the same time the increasingly wide spectrum of the services that are offered by logistics operators increases the demands made on couriers and the tasks they have to implement. For example, the development of e-commerce has led to an increase in parcel deliveries to private individuals, which requires greater flexibility on the part of the couriers in order to meet the requirements of customers in this target group. In addition to the increasing number of tasks which make up their daily work, couriers also perform the role of representing their company. "These examples illustrate that couriers don't just have to be good drivers -- they also have to be able to communicate well and have the ability to remain calm and good humoured in tense situations. In addition they have to have a strong sense of responsibility", says Tael.

He calls on everyone to make a note of the day which has been nominated as 'Couriers' Day' and to congratulate couriers on the occasion of this special day for them when they call to deliver a parcel. "If you see a courier from DPD or from another courier service in the city, give him or her a wave or a smile", says Tael, adding that DPD is optimistic that this will prove a successful occasion while calling on the other logistics operators to join in the tradition.
